WGC 2026 Task 6 — What's on the Cards for Sunday 24 May
The 40th FAI World Gliding Championships at Częstochowa-Rudniki in Poland is into its sixth competition day, tasks have been set.
Open Class
The Open Class has been set a 3 hour 30 minute Assigned Area Task with the total possible range spanning from around 436 km to just over 591 km. Gliders will cross the start line heading roughly south before turning north-west toward Mikstat, which has a generous 40 km radius cylinder. From there the task swings south to Bogacica (20 km cylinder), then east to Pijanów (20 km cylinder), a leg of over 156 km that represents the longest individual segment of the day. A shorter leg south takes gliders to Lasków (15 km cylinder) before the final run back to the finish at Rudniki (5 km cylinder). To achieve a competitive speed over the nominated 3:30 task time, pilots will need to make effective use of the larger cylinders on the northern and eastern legs.
18m Class
The 18m Class task is set for 3 hours again as an Assigned Area Task with a range from approximately 386 km to 511 km depending on cylinder use. Gliders start from Kobylczyce heading north-west to Niemce, the largest cylinder of the task at 25 km radius, before heading south to Wolczyn (20 km cylinder). The longest leg then runs east to Pijanów (20 km cylinder) — a 148 km dash shared with the Open and Multi-Seat classes — before a shorter leg south-west to Bichniów (10 km cylinder) and the return to Rudniki. The 18m task shares the Pijanów waypoint with the other two classes, suggesting that the eastern portions of southern Poland are offering the most usable terrain for cross-country flight today.
20 Metre Multi-Seat Class
The two-seat class has a 3 hour 30 minute AAT ranging from around 408 km to 548 km. Starting from the northern start point at North 5K, gliders head north-west to Grabów with a 30 km cylinder, then south to Wolczyn (20 km cylinder), east to Pijanów (20 km cylinder), and south to Nowe Miasto (15 km cylinder) before the final leg to Rudniki. Like the Open Class, the multi-seaters face the same lengthy eastward leg to Pijanów as the key decision point of the day.
Common Conditions
With a high pressure QNH of 1029 hPa over the region, conditions may be relatively stable, and the shared Pijanów turnpoint across all three classes at the eastern extremity of each task will give observers a useful common reference point when following the day's flying.
Monday 25 May is an official rest day.
