Varese

The Adele and Giorgio Orsi Aero Club will hold the sixth E Glide competition at the end of June at Varese.

E6Glide pilots will fly in the breathtaking landscapes of the Italian pre-Alps, and face a unique challenge. Pilots will be able to use limited amount of energy from their engines, at any time during the race that they see as advantageous, to improve their performance.

E6Glide is a great opportunity for pilots to fly in the pre-Alpine area at the end of the summer season, and for the public to enjoy the spectacle in the mild climate of the lakes of northern Italy.

EGlide is an innovative competition format for electric powered gliders, where a defined energy quota is allowed to be used during the races. This enables pilots to avoid outlandings or to increase their average speed with the help of their electric motor.

As at previous E Glide competitions, including Pavullo in 2019, Grossrückerswalde 2020, Varese 2021, and Saint-Auban 2022 and 2023, task setting is likely to be possible on most days, reducing the uncertainties that often affect the outcome of traditional gliding competitions. For instance, during the Pavullo E Glide, more tasks were flown compared to the 13.5m WGC held during the same period.

However, the allowed energy quota introduces new strategic and tactical considerations, which changes the dynamic of the competition. A glider on task could be using some engine propulsion, or just thermals. They might be on final glide with some usable engine energy left to increase their performance. These are some of of the tactical questions pilots will be considering during the competition.

The Aero Club Adele Orsi is renowned for its warm welcome, excellent facilities and its status as home to many of Italy’s top-ranked pilots. Varese is beautifully located near seven lakes, in the north-western part of Lombardy at the foot of the Alps.
